Plagiarism Policy of Department of Computer Science and Engineering

  1. Purpose

This policy is applicable to all the programmes offered by department of Computer Science and Engineering. This policy ensures academic integrity and originality required in all academic pursuits including all phases of project work (like proposal, implementation, report, source code, and presentations), Project based learning (PBL), Lab assignments, Dissertations, Seminar and so on.

  1. Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of another person’s ideas, text, results, designs, or code without proper acknowledgment, whether intentional or unintentional.

  1. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Dissertations/ Project reports and documentation
  • Software source code, algorithms, scripts, and models
  • Diagrams, figures, tables, datasets, and design artifacts
  • Literature survey and so on.
  1. Similarity Limits
  • Maximum allowable similarity: ≤ 10%
  • Exclusions: references, bibliography and appendices.
  • Similarity must be verified using institution-approved tool (Turnitin/ any other approved tool)
  1. Code Plagiarism Guidelines
  • Source code must be written by the student(s).
  • Use of open-source libraries, APIs and frameworks is permitted only with proper attribution and licensing compliance.
  • Copying code/text from online repositories (GitHub, GitLab, Stack Overflow), Previous student projects, published research papers or other sources, Commercial or proprietary sources, is strictly prohibited.
  • Code similarity checks may be conducted using specialized tools.
  • Minor syntax changes, variable renaming, or reformatting do not constitute originality.

  1. Use of AI Tools
  • Direct inclusion of AI-generated content or code will be treated as plagiarism.
  1. Student Responsibilities
  • Ensure proper citation using IEEE standards.
  • Submit a signed originality declaration approved by the project supervisor.
  1. Penalties
Similarity Level Action
≤ 10% Accepted
11% – 20% Mandatory revision and penalty (40%)
21% – 30% Project rejected; 0 marks shall be awarded, resubmission in next back examination
> 30% Project cancelled; 0 marks shall be awarded, disciplinary action
